On December the 10th, Tallinn Airport Ltd celebrated the opening of Tartu airport passenger terminal, which marks the completion of one of the phases of extensive reconstruction works at Tartu airport.


The passenger terminal, opened initially in 1981, has received a modern exterior as well as renovated and extended passenger facilities. During the reconstruction works the terminal area was extended  to 1650 sq m with waiting halls for departing and arriving passengers as well as new baggage handling and security systems. The passengers will have the possibility to use free of charge Wifi services as well as self-service check-in kiosks and enjoy a view to the airfield from the waiting hall on the second floor. In addition to the passenger terminal extension the airport also has a new parking lot for 70 cars and parking areas for public transport vehicles.

The construction cost including a temporary terminal was12,3 million kroons, the building was designed by Tartu Arhitektuuribüroo and constructed by AS Facio.

Besides passenger terminal reconstruction works the runway was extended to 1800 m along with the renovation of the old surface and the installation of the new runway lighting system with PAPI lights. The airport also received modern runway maintenance vehicles, fire rescue and de-icing trucks and the additional floor has been added to the air traffic control tower with a 360º view and modern equipment.

In November 2009 the construction of the fire rescue depot and the garage building was completed costing 5,8 million kroons. The construction works were carried out by OÜ Astlanda.

Tartu airport was opened for scheduled passenger traffic in July this year. Tartu-Riga flights are operated by airBaltic 10 times per week and Estonian Air operates Tartu-Stockhom route with 4 weekly flights.

Nearly 140 million estonian kroons has been invested in the development of Tartu airport with the support of EU funds.
